About the Drug

Soma is a pain relieving drug. It acts by soothing or relaxing the muscle and relieves the pain and muscle stiffness. It is used mainly to reduce painful conditions due to muscle spasms, strain and sprain.

 

How the drug should be taken

To be taken orally, Soma is generally given as adult dosage of Soma 350 mg tablet, three times a day and at bedtime. When taken along with food or milk, the chances of gastrointestinal disturbances, as a side effect, are reduced. The drug is not to be given to children below 12 years of age.

 

Some precautions have to be followed while using Soma:

Before starting on Soma, it is advised to consult your doctor. Use of soma is contraindicated under certain conditions like acute intermittent porphyria, any kind of kidney problem or liver disease. Under such conditions the doctor would suggest a lower dosage and some special tests during the course of treatment. .

It is not known whether Soma will harm an unborn baby or if Soma has the capacity to enter breast milk and thus affect the baby. However one should inform the doctor, if pregnant or if planning to do so when on treatment, or is a nursing (breast-feeding) mother. And the medication should never be started before taking the doctor’s opinion, during pregnancy. The drug is also not suitable for children under 12 years of age.

When a dose is missed: A missed dose of Soma can be taken if remembered within an hour or so. But if the time is due for the next dose then, the regular next dose must be taken. Double-dose should not be taken.

In case of overdose : Emergency medical attention is needed in case of overdose of Soma . Symptoms of a Soma overdose include lowering in blood pressure resulting in dizziness, fatigue unconsciousness, low rate or difficulty in breathing.

 

Possible side effects: Use of Soma can manifest some side effects like dizziness, light headedness, sense of imbalance, vertigo, ataxia, tremor, depression, irritability, headache, syncope, and loss of sleep.

 

Allergy: Some people may be allergic to Soma. The allergic reaction occurs generally by the first to fourth dose in patients who are using Soma for the first time. Allergic manifestations include skin rashes; erythema multiforme, pruritus, and eosinophilia. Patients using Soma may cross react to the drug meprobamate.

Serious allergic manifestations include asthmatic attacks, fever, fatigue, body ache, drowsiness, angioneurotic edema, smarting eyes, hypotension, and anaphylactic shock.

 

Storage: The drug should be kept at ambient temperature 15°- 30°C (59°- 86°F) and in air sealed containers.

Exercise caution: Soma produces a sedative effect resulting in some sleepiness or drowsiness. Therefore one should be careful while carrying out activities that require alertness like driving, operating machinery, or other hazardous activities. It is better to avoid alcohol as it could enhance the sedative effect caused by Soma.
